| Mô tả mặt trước | The obverse displays the official seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands at center, depicting a frigate bird in flight above a traditional Marshallese outrigger canoe on the sea, with a rising sun emitting stylized rays in the upper field, flanked by a dirigible airship to the left and a fishing net to the right. Palm trees and a distant tower appear along the shoreline in the middle ground. The denomination $50 appears to the left and the year 1989 to the right within the inner border. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, while the Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN is inscribed along the lower border, all enclosed within a decorative chain-link rim. |

Issued in 1989, this coin predates any actual Mars landing by decades — NASA's first successful Mars surface missions were the Viking landers of 1976, and no crewed landing has occurred to date. The Marshall Islands' aggressive commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was explicitly designed to generate foreign currency revenue rather than serve domestic circulation, a strategy common among small Pacific island nations during that period. The coins were marketed directly to collectors through international dealers, bypassing normal numismatic channels entirely.
