The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage under U.S. administration and continued aggressively after gaining sovereignty in 1986, producing an enormous volume of themed silver rounds throughout the 1990s — many of which were sold directly to collectors and never intended for circulation. The F-4 Phantom II issue fits squarely into that program, which drew consistent criticism from numismatists for prioritizing topical appeal over mintage discipline.

McDonnell Douglas delivered the first production F-4 to the Navy in 1960. By the time this coin was struck, the airframe had logged over three decades of combat across Vietnam, the Middle East, and multiple allied air forces.
