Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of 1577–1580 made him the second man to sail around the world and the first to complete the voyage as commander — Magellan having died in the Philippines. Queen Elizabeth I knighted Drake aboard the Golden Hind at Deptford in 1581, a ceremony the Spanish ambassador attended under protest. Cook Islands began issuing collector silver in the late 1980s primarily for the export numismatic market, with this piece falling within a broader Pacific commemorative series timed loosely to Age of Exploration anniversaries.
