The peregrine falcon issue appeared at a moment when the species had only recently been pulled back from near-extinction in North America, with DDT-caused reproductive failure having collapsed breeding populations through the 1960s and 1970s. The U.S. federal ban on DDT came in 1972; by 1991, recovery programs using captive breeding were showing measurable results.
