Pedro de Alvarado served as one of Hernán Cortés's most ruthless lieutenants during the conquest of Mexico, responsible for the Massacre of the Great Temple in 1520 — an unprovoked slaughter of Aztec nobles during a religious festival that directly triggered the catastrophic Spanish retreat known as La Noche Triste. He later led the brutal conquest of Guatemala largely on his own initiative, operating well outside any formal crown mandate.
