Pedro de Alvarado served as one of Hernán Cortés's most ruthless lieutenants during the conquest of Mexico, responsible for the Massacre of the Great Temple in 1520 — an unprovoked slaughter of Aztec nobles during a religious festival that directly triggered the catastrophic Spanish retreat known as La Noche Triste.
