| 表面の説明 | The crowned coat of arms of Niue occupies the central field, quartered with symbols including stars, sailing vessels, a figure, a sheaf, and crossed tools, surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked on either side by silver fern fronds, emblematic of the Pacific island nation. The legend NIUE appears to the upper left and the date 1988 to the upper right, both rendered in raised Latin lettering against the mirror-polished proof field. |

Niue entered the commemorative coin market aggressively in the late 1980s, licensing celebrity and sports figures through arrangements that had little to do with the island's 1,800-person population and everything to do with generating foreign revenue. Beckenbauer was at the time managing West Germany, having led the national side to the 1986 World Cup final — his dual status as the only man to win the World Cup as both captain and manager made him a marketable subject ahead of Italia 90.
The .625 fineness is notably below the .925 standard typical of collector silver issues from this period, a cost-cutting decision common across Niue's early sports series.
