Reverse description A dignified bust-length portrait of General Douglas MacArthur faces three-quarters left, depicted in full military dress uniform with his characteristic peaked cap bearing the United States Army general officer's eagle insignia. Seven five-pointed stars arranged in an arc to the left of the portrait signify his rank as General of the Army. The denomination 50 DOLLARS appears to the right of the portrait. The engraver's initials KW are inscribed below the bust. The legend GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARTHUR · DEFENDER OF FREEDOM curves along the upper periphery, while the quotation · OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE · curves along the lower periphery.

Additional information

Niue entered the commemorative coin market aggressively in the late 1980s, licensing historical and pop-culture subjects through the Franklin Mint and similar distributors to generate revenue — the island's GDP being too small to sustain government finances through conventional means. MacArthur was a reliable seller in the American collector market, and Niue issued a string of World War II military figures during this period under essentially the same commercial logic.

MacArthur died in 1964. This coin appeared 25 years later with no particular anniversary to justify it.
