Cook Islands has issued commemorative gold in partnership with various mints and licensing arrangements for decades, with many pieces in this class struck by the Coin Invest Trust (CIT) facility in Liechtenstein under New Zealand's broader Pacific territory framework. The "60th Birthday of the Emperor" refers to Naruhito, who ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne in May 2019 following his father Akihito's abdication — the first voluntary abdication by a Japanese emperor in over two centuries. Naruhito turned sixty in February 2020.
