The "Double Sovereign" denomination revives a format last produced for British colonial coinage in the 19th century, when the Perth Mint — established in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint — struck sovereigns for export to London. That branch relationship formally ended in 1970, but the Perth Mint retained the right to strike sovereign-format gold, a commercial arrangement that continues under the current Western Australian government ownership structure.
This piece marks the first Perth Mint sovereign-type issue bearing Charles III's effigy following the 2022 accession. The portrait by Jody Clark, already in use on UK coinage since 2015, carries over without modification.
