| Описание аверса | The obverse displays the official seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, centrally featuring a stylised frigatebird with outstretched wings superimposed over a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation map. Flanking the central motif are two crossed traditional paddles, a radiant sun in the upper field, a sailing canoe to the right, and coconut palms to the left. The word SEAL appears on a small tablet at the base of the design. The outer border consists of a decorative chain link pattern, with the legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcing along the upper periphery, and the inscriptions .9999 PURE, 1/4 OZ GOLD, and JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN distributed along the lower and lateral fields. |

The Marshall Islands gained the authority to issue its own coinage in 1986 under the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which came into force that same year. This $50 gold piece was among the inaugural issues, struck to mark that transition to self-governance — but it was never legal tender in any practical sense, as the US dollar remained the circulating currency.
Produced in fractional gold at 7.78g of .9999 fine, the issue was aimed squarely at the collector market from the outset.
