This coin commemorates the eighteenth anniversary of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's seizure of power on November 7, 1987, when he removed the ailing Habib Bourguiba from the presidency via a medical coup — a team of doctors certifying Bourguiba mentally unfit to govern. Ben Ali then consolidated authority rapidly, abolishing the presidency-for-life provision Bourguiba had installed for himself. The French-legend variant exists alongside an Arabic-legend counterpart, issued to serve Tunisia's bilingual official culture rather than any separate market.
