This note belongs to one of the most administratively improvised currency episodes in interwar Europe. Following the armistice and Romania's military advance into Transylvania and the Banat in late 1918 and 1919, Romanian authorities faced a practical problem: the region still ran on Austro-Hungarian Kronen, and Bucharest's own leu-denominated notes hadn't been prepared for the transition. The solution was to overstamp existing Austro-Hungarian banknotes — or, in this case, issue provisional notes denominated in coroane, the Romanian-language rendering of Kronen, to serve the occupied territories until full monetary integration could be arranged.
The explicit geographic designation in the title — naming both Transilvania and Banat — reflects the political uncertainty of the moment. The final borders were not yet settled under the Paris Peace Conference when this note entered circulation.
