Postage Currency was a direct response to the hoarding crisis of 1862, when the public yanked every coin — including small copper cents — out of circulation almost overnight after the outbreak of war. With no fractional coinage available, postage stamps were being used as change, stuffed loose into envelopes or stuck to cards. The Treasury Department formalized this stopgap by authorizing notes that reproduced actual postage stamp imagery, hence the name.
First-issue notes of this series lack the "Treasury" imprint that appeared on subsequent issues — a distinction worth knowing when attributing examples. The perforated edge variety of the first issue is considerably scarcer than the straight-edge version.
