The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, formalized in 2000, was the first official transfrontier conservation area in southern Africa — a cross-border agreement between South Africa and Botswana that absorbed the former Kalahari Gemsbok National Park on the South African side and Gemsbok National Park in Botswana.
