One of four coins in Cook Islands' 2006 series documenting the petroleum industry, this piece was issued during a period when Pacific island nations were actively courting offshore energy investment as a revenue strategy. Cook Islands itself has no oil production — the series is commemorative in the purest sense, celebrating an industry entirely foreign to the issuing territory.
