Issued to mark Elizabeth II's fifty years on the throne, this piece is one of several Canadian commemoratives produced for the 2002 Golden Jubilee — a year in which the Royal Canadian Mint released an unusually large volume of silver collector issues across multiple denominations and themes. The Jubilee itself was celebrated under a shadow; Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother had died in March of that year, just weeks before the main commemorative programming began.
