The Afghan cameleers — most of whom were actually from what is now Pakistan, recruited from Baluchistan and the Northwest Frontier — operated the inland freight networks that made exploration and settlement of Australia's arid interior possible from the 1860s onward. They were effectively shut out of Australia by the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901, the legislative cornerstone of the White Australia Policy, and most were forced to leave a country many had lived in for decades. The camel trains they abandoned were released into the outback; their feral descendants still roam central Australia in numbers exceeding one million.
