| Obverse description | Fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in fine detail by engraver Ian Rank-Broadley. The truncation of the bust is bare, with the engraver's initials IRB incuse at the base of the neck. | Reverse description | The reverse depicts a bold portrait of Eddie Mabo, the Torres Strait Islander land rights activist, facing three-quarters to the right in the centre of the field. To the left, the numeral 50 is prominently rendered in large stylised figures, accompanied by a flowing ribbon or script motif. To the right, a depiction of a historical referendum ballot paper bears the inscriptions RIGHT WRONGS WRITE and YES for ABORIGINES!, the word ABORIGINES! repeated three times in diminishing perspective.
