Australia's original 1966 fifty-cent piece was the only silver coin introduced at decimalisation — a political concession to public skepticism about the new currency, intended to anchor confidence in the changeover. It lasted barely two years in that form. Rising silver prices meant the intrinsic metal value quickly approached and then exceeded face value, triggering a hoarding epidemic that pulled virtually the entire mintage out of circulation by 1968. The coin was replaced with a dodecagonal cupro-nickel version the following year.
Total mintage across all mints reached approximately 36 million, yet circulated survivors in any decent state are genuinely scarce for exactly that reason.
