The Darvel Bay (Borneo) Tobacco Plantations Limited was a British-registered agricultural enterprise operating in what is now the Lahad Datu district of Sabah, along the northeast Bornean coast. In the absence of adequate small-denomination coinage in remote plantation territory — then under British North Borneo Chartered Company jurisdiction — private employers routinely issued their own scrip to pay and supply their workforce. This note is a product of that necessity.
Charles Skipper & East, the London security printers responsible for this series, produced plantation and company scrip across multiple British colonial territories during the same period. The perforated cancellation indicates a redeemed example — standard procedure when scrip was returned and retired rather than destroyed outright.
