Churchill's connection to the Solomon Islands is direct and bloody: the waters around Guadalcanal witnessed some of the most ferocious naval combat of the Pacific War, and it was Churchill who, alongside Roosevelt, sanctioned Operation Watchtower in 1942 — the Allied offensive that made the Solomons a turning point against Japanese expansion.
