The shield is quartered with the traditional emblems of Castile and León — a castle and a rampant lion — alongside the arms of Aragon and Navarre, surmounted by a mural crown. The Pillars of Hercules flank the shield on either side, each bearing a ribbon with the motto PLUS to the left and ULTRA to the right.
