Pallaruelo de Monegros is a small agricultural village in the Monegros desert region of Aragon, and this note was issued by its municipal council during the anarchist-influenced Republican administration of the Spanish Civil War. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities issued their own emergency fractional currency in 1936–37 after silver and copper coins disappeared from circulation almost overnight — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the chaos of mobilization.
