One of thousands of locally issued emergency notes produced across Republican-held Catalonia during the Civil War, this Gelida 50 céntimos exists because the central government's collapse in small-denomination coinage supply forced municipalities — some with populations in the hundreds — to print their own fractional currency. The Ajuntament de Gelida, a small Penedès wine-producing town, had no professional printing infrastructure; these notes were almost certainly produced on whatever commercial press was locally available.

Turró's catalog documents over 1,700 distinct Catalan municipal issues from 1936–1937. Gelida's output was minimal, and surviving examples in any condition are scarce simply due to low print runs, not selective preservation.
