One of hundreds of municipal emergency notes printed by Catalan town councils during the early months of the Civil War, when the Republican zone faced an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. Castellví de la Marca is a minor municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca — its economic activity centered on viticulture — and a note from this village would have circulated almost exclusively within the immediate locality, redeemable in theory at the town hall.
Three signatories were required: the mayor, the treasurer, and the secretary-comptroller. That level of bureaucratic formality in a wartime scrip note from a village of a few hundred inhabitants is quietly telling.
