50 Céntimos Castellvell

Castellvell del Camp is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own paper fractional currency when coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely after 1936. The Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning coin supply pushed this responsibility onto local councils — ajuntaments — many of which had no printing infrastructure and relied on whatever was available locally.
