Essai strikes for Cambodia's 1860 coinage were produced in Paris as the country moved toward formal French protectorate status — a process completed in 1863. This piece predates that treaty, placing it in the narrow window when Norodom I was maneuvering between Thai suzerainty and French overtures. Pattern issues from this negotiation period are exceptionally rare; most never progressed to circulation strikes, and the 50 centimes denomination was ultimately abandoned before regular coinage commenced.
