French chambres de commerce were authorized to issue emergency small-denomination notes in August 1914 specifically because the mobilization for war had triggered an immediate hoarding crisis — silver and bronze coins vanished from circulation within days. Bordeaux's chamber was among the first provincial bodies to act, and these 50 centimes notes filled the void left at the bottom of the currency ladder where metallic coin had been entirely absorbed.
The JP#30-4/5 reference covers two closely related varieties distinguished by minor typographic differences in the text block — a distinction that catches out collectors who assume the series is uniform.
