French Equatorial Africa's 1943 bronze coinage was produced under the Free French administration of Félix Éboué, the Guadeloupe-born governor who had rallied the territory to de Gaulle in August 1940 — one of the first colonial administrators to do so. With metropolitan France under occupation and normal supply chains severed, the Free French struck these coins in Pretoria at the South African Mint, substituting bronze for the nickel-brass of earlier issues due to wartime metal restrictions.
Éboué died in Cairo in May 1944, never seeing the liberation he helped make possible.
