The Régence de Tunis issued this note under conditions of acute material shortage — Allied landings in November 1942 had severed normal supply lines, and locally printed low-denomination fractional notes were rushed into circulation to address a severe coin shortage. Imprimerie La Rapide, a commercial Tunis printer with no prior currency work of note, produced the series entirely within the occupied territory, which accounts for the notably plain execution.
Tunisia changed hands in May 1943. Notes issued under the Regency that year effectively straddled two administrations.
