INTUR, Cuba's state tourism agency, operated a parallel currency system designed to extract hard currency from foreign visitors while keeping them financially isolated from the peso economy. These coins circulated exclusively within tourist-designated hotels, shops, and restaurants — Cubans holding them faced serious legal risk. The system ran from the early 1980s until 1989, when INTUR itself was dissolved and its functions absorbed into other state bodies, making this 50 Centavos one of the final issues before the whole apparatus was dismantled.
