Portugal's postwar nickel-brass coinage of this period was a direct response to the metal shortages that had forced wartime substitutions throughout the 1940s. The Estado Novo government under Salazar maintained strict control over monetary policy, and the Casa da Moeda's shift back toward more stable alloys in 1948 reflected improved access to raw materials as European trade routes normalized after the war.
The three-year run ended in 1950 without a replacement type appearing until later in the decade, leaving a modest gap in the 50 centavos denomination's circulation history.
