Four Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu) are disposed radially around the central hole in the conventional cross-reading arrangement: 慶 (top), 通 (right), 元 (bottom), 寶 (left), together reading Qingyuan Tongbao. The bold, well-formed characters exhibit fine calligraphic quality with deep relief casting. A plain raised outer rim borders the flat field, which shows an attractive dark brown patina with traces of green cuprite. |

Above the hole: 勅 (imperial edict). To the right of the hole, a vertical column reads 庆元元年皇 (first year of Qingyuan, imperial). To the left, a vertical column reads 改铸此号钱 (recast under this reign title currency). Below the hole: 五十料 (denomination of 50 units). The inscription collectively records the imperial edict authorizing the casting of this 50-cash denomination coin in the first year of the Qingyuan era. The reverse displays the same dark patina as the obverse, with a plain raised outer rim. |
