Issued to mark the turn of the millennium and Bhumibol Adulyadej's ongoing reign — at that point already the longest of any living monarch — this piece was part of a broader Thai commemorative program that drew heavily on royal astrology and Brahminic court tradition. The dragon imagery here is not incidental: Thai palace ceremonies for auspicious calendar transitions have incorporated naga and dragon symbolism from Khmer cosmological practice dating back to the Sukhothai period.
