The 1999 date marks the handover of Macau from Portuguese administration to China on December 20th of that year, ending over 440 years of Portuguese presence — the longest-running European colonial tenure in Asia. The S.A.R. designation, Special Administrative Region, mirrors the framework established for Hong Kong two years earlier and was negotiated under the 1987 Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration.
