Abkhazia's coin program occupies an unusual legal and diplomatic space — the territory declared independence from Georgia in 1992, but remains recognized as a sovereign state by only a handful of UN members, Russia chief among them. The Bank of Abkhazia issues currency that functions largely as a collector vehicle; the Apsar series has no meaningful circulation role in a territory that uses the Russian ruble for daily transactions.
The Cathedral of St. Simon the Zealot in New Athos was built between 1888 and 1900 by monks of the New Athos Monastery, with significant financial backing from the Russian imperial family, including Alexander III.
