Rwanda's National Bank has issued a long-running wildlife series targeting the collector market, and the Shoebill entry is among the more zoologically specific choices — the bird is native to central African wetlands, including areas within the Democratic Republic of Congo bordering Rwanda, though it is rarely associated with Rwanda proper. The species is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with fewer than 8,000 individuals estimated in the wild.
