| Descripción del anverso | The Khalq government arms — a wreath-encircled emblem surmounted by a star, with the Pashto inscription خلق (Khalq, meaning "The People") — appears at the top centre, set within an ornate dark-green guilloche border with arabesques and rosettes at each corner. The central field carries the promise text and denomination in Pashto script against a multicolour underprint of floral and geometric motifs, flanked by large stylised numeral "50" vignettes on each side. Two signature lines appear at the lower centre above an octagonal ornamental medallion, with the denomination "50 AFGHANIS" in a cartouche at the lower right. |

The Khalq ("masses") party seized power in April 1978 in what became known as the Saur Revolution, and this note was among the first currency issued under the new People's Democratic Party government. Goznak's involvement was no accident — Soviet printing infrastructure and Soviet political sponsorship were tightly linked from the start of the PDPA's time in power.
The Soviet invasion followed in December 1979, by which point these notes were already in circulation. P#54 is occasionally found with quite heavy use, reflecting the inflationary pressures and economic disruption that characterized even the earliest months of the Khalq period.
