To his right in the field, a relief depiction of the Holy Door (Porta Santa), referencing the approaching Jubilee Year 2000. The engraver's signature 'E. Driutti' appears to the left of the effigy, and 'Contri' is incuse in the lower field. | Description du revers | Central depiction of the Virgin Mary as Theotokos (Madonna and Child) in the Byzantine-Romanesque style, closely inspired by the celebrated mosaic icon of the Salus Populi Romani venerated in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. The Virgin is shown frontally, nimbed with a cross-bearing halo, robed in draped garments, and cradling the Christ Child before her. A rosette ornament appears to the left in the field. The legend 'CITTA DEL VATICANO' arcs across the upper field, flanked by an apostrophe mark; the date '1998' and the Rome mint mark 'R' appear to the lower right, with the denomination 'L. 50000' inscribed along the lower arc. |
