| Reverse description | Central depiction of the Virgin Mary as Theotokos (Madonna and Child) in the Byzantine-Romanesque style, closely inspired by the celebrated mosaic icon of the Salus Populi Romani venerated in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. The Virgin is shown frontally, nimbed with a cross-bearing halo, robed in draped garments, and cradling the Christ Child before her. A rosette ornament appears to the left in the field. The legend 'CITTA DEL VATICANO' arcs across the upper field, flanked by an apostrophe mark; the date '1998' and the Rome mint mark 'R' appear to the lower right, with the denomination 'L. 50000' inscribed along the lower arc. |
