Obverse description At center, the coat of arms of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, depicting a spread eagle with wings displayed, bearing a shield on its breast, surmounted by a crown, and surrounded by radiating rays; the arms are flanked by two olive branches in the upper field. The date 1998 appears above the arms along the upper rim, and the denomination 50000 is inscribed below. A circular Armenian-script legend surrounds the lower portion of the field, reading the name of the republic in Armenian.

Reverse description At center, a left-facing bearded bust of Mesrop Mashtots, the 5th-century Armenian monk, theologian, and creator of the Armenian alphabet, rendered in high relief with fine engraving of hair and beard. The bust is set within a deeply recessed field bordered by an ornamental ring of alternating dashes and dots. A bilingual circular legend surrounds the central device, with the name ՄԵՍՐՈՊ ՄԱՇՏՈՑ in Armenian script above and MESROP MASHTOTS in Latin script below, flanking the date ∙2000∙ at the lower center, commemorating the 2000th anniversary of his birth.
