Opmerkingen

Jugobanka's component banks — the "osnovne banke" — were semi-autonomous units tied to specific municipalities, and Kula, a small town in the Vojvodina, operated one of the lesser-known branches in the network. This coupon-format instrument emerged during Yugoslavia's hyperinflationary collapse in the early 1990s, when the dinar was losing value faster than the central printing apparatus could respond. Rather than cash, some enterprises and municipal institutions issued scrip redeemable for specific goods or services — in this case, a hot meal. The denomination of 50,000 dinara reflects the grotesque arithmetic of that inflation, when such a sum bought something as basic as a single cafeteria lunch.
