| Descrizione del dritto | Printed in dark brown letterpress on cream paper, the obverse is framed by a dense repetitive border of Gothic Fraktur text reading '50 Millionen' along all four margins, interspersed with lozenge ornaments, with the denomination '50.000.000' repeated in the corner cartouches. The central field carries the issuer's name and note type in Gothic letterpress above the large ornate Fraktur value inscription 'Fünfzig Millionen Mark'. The lower portion contains a three-line redemption clause in small Gothic type, the issue date 'Darmstadt, den 1. September 1923', the circular Hessian lion arms vignette at lower left, two manuscript signatures of the Direktorium, and the serial number with series letter printed in green. |

One of hundreds of emergency currency instruments issued by German regional banks during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark's collapse forced state banks, municipalities, and even private firms to print their own notgeld to meet payroll and basic commerce. The Hessische Landesbank, headquartered in Darmstadt, issued this 50-million-Mark denomination during the period when the currency was losing value so rapidly that notes were sometimes signed and dated by hand the morning they were distributed, already worth less by afternoon.
The fifty-million figure, staggering in name, represented a transitional denomination — neither the ceiling nor the floor of what came within weeks.
