Bavaria's regional state banks issued their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923 independently of the Reichsbank, and the Bayerische Staatsbank was among the more prolific. By the time this 50-million-Mark note entered circulation, the denomination was already obsolescent within weeks — the Rentenmark reform of November 1923 rendered the entire hyperinflationary series worthless overnight.
Munich printing during this period was often contracted to local commercial printers working under extreme schedule pressure, which accounts for the simplified production quality common across the late 1923 issues.
