The Bank of China's 1918 note series was issued across multiple regional branches, each authorized to print its own place of payment — Peking, Shanghai, Manchuria, Tientsin, and others — which is why Pick 52 splits into a long sequence of suffix variants. The American Bank Note Company handled production throughout, working from a single master design adapted with overprinted branch designations. Some branches saw heavy circulation; others issued in very small quantities before regional politics interrupted distribution entirely.
The warlord fragmentation of China during this period meant that a note perfectly valid in one province could be refused outright two hundred miles away.
