| Obverse description | The national emblem of the People's Republic of China occupies the central field, depicting the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen) above a cogwheel and encircled by a wreath of grain ears, surmounted by five stars in a radiant arrangement. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in raised Chinese characters, while the date 1991 appears in Arabic numerals at the bottom of the field. The design is executed in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. |

| Reverse description | A finely detailed portrait of the celebrated Qing dynasty novelist Cao Xueqin is depicted in three-quarter view, seated and holding a manuscript scroll, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. To the left in the middle ground, an elaborate classical garden scene with pavilions, terraces, and elegantly robed female figures evokes imagery from his masterwork Dream of the Red Chamber. The legend 曹雪芹 (Cao Xueqin) arcs along the upper left in raised Chinese characters, followed by the birth and death years 公元 1715-1763年 continuing along the upper right. The denomination 5元 is inscribed in bold numerals and characters in the lower right field. |
