| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is printed in purple and peach tones, with a central vignette of a large crowd of people from various Chinese ethnic groups gathered in celebration, carrying banners and flowers beneath a torch; the banner reads 'Founding of the People's Republic of China'. Guilloche rosettes bearing the denomination 伍圓 in Chinese characters are positioned to the left and right of the central vignette, framed by intricate lathe-work borders. The issuer name 中國人民銀行 appears in a panel at the upper centre, with the date 一九五三年 inscribed along the lower margin. |

Printed by Goznak in Moscow and delivered to China during the early years of Sino-Soviet cooperation, this note belongs to the second series of Renminbi — the first series having been rushed out during the civil war years on whatever presses were available. The 1953 series was a deliberate upgrade: Beijing turned to Soviet technical expertise precisely because domestic printing capacity couldn't yet meet the quality standards the new government wanted for its national currency.
The Goznak connection is worth noting. Soviet-printed Chinese notes from this period occasionally show the fine intaglio work characteristic of Moscow production, distinguishable from later Chinese-printed issues in the same series.
