Printed by Goznak in Moscow and delivered to China during the early years of Sino-Soviet cooperation, this note belongs to the second series of Renminbi — the first series having been rushed out during the civil war years on whatever presses were available. The 1953 series was a deliberate upgrade: Beijing turned to Soviet technical expertise precisely because domestic printing capacity couldn't yet meet the quality standards the new government wanted for its national currency.
The Goznak connection is worth noting. Soviet-printed Chinese notes from this period occasionally show the fine intaglio work characteristic of Moscow production, distinguishable from later Chinese-printed issues in the same series.
