Obverse description The obverse is printed in purple and peach tones, with a central vignette of a large crowd of people from various Chinese ethnic groups gathered in celebration, carrying banners and flowers beneath a torch; the banner reads 'Founding of the People's Republic of China'. Guilloche rosettes bearing the denomination 伍圓 in Chinese characters are positioned to the left and right of the central vignette, framed by intricate lathe-work borders. The issuer name 中國人民銀行 appears in a panel at the upper centre, with the date 一九五三年 inscribed along the lower margin.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in purple on a peach and multicolour guilloche underprint, centred on an elaborate floral rosette in blue, yellow, and green. The national coat of arms of the People's Republic of China is placed at the top centre, flanked by decorative cloud scroll borders. The bank name and denomination are rendered in four scripts — Chinese (中國人民銀行 伍圓), Uyghur, Mongolian, and Tibetan — with the year 1953 inscribed in a cartouche at the base.
